Somebody vibe coded Adobe Creative Suite in the Rust programming language. This is a remake of 7 Adobe products. The apps are open source, made with the help of AI. Let’s see why it is an interesting thing in software development.
First, I would like to clarify what vibe coding means: the person make an application with just AI prompting. This can be done in more iterations. You give the first prompt, AI make the research and the coding. Agents can also test the code in some ways. I’m sure that the “developer” also tested it manually. I think that a vibe coder is not a real developer. They should not know every steps of software development.
Maybe you also saw a lot of videos about Claude Fable and GPT Astra how they create complete games and other software.
But I turn back to the main topic. The name of this free suite is ArtCraft. This is a collection of 12 apps (as I started to write the draft of this article a couple of days ago “only” 7 apps were available).
So this person made the most popular graphic apps free (or at least the replica of them). You can reach the official website of the vibe coded suite here.
List of the Adobe products and the equivalent ArtCraft software:
- Photoshop -> PhotoCraft
- Illustrator -> VectorCraft
- Premiere Pro -> VideoCraft
- Lightroom -> LightCraft
- Acrobat -> PdfCraft
- After Effects -> EffectCraft
The apps are in development phase, written in Rust as I mentioned and are available open source on Gitlab, so everybody can download and install them, inspect the code, add other features and so on.
Looks like many of the actual Adobe users appreciate this action.
I don’t want to go too deep into this topic, I just saw a couple of videos about this and I can say that maybe this is the future of software development.
But let me highlight some important points (you know that I’m critical of new trends and AI-made products):
- vibe coded apps can contain security holes, so called vulnerabilities which hackers can use to make harmful actions
- I’m not sure that it is ethical to make all Adobe products available in open source
- hence the developer says that its fully legal, because they not copied the source code of the original apps
- I suppose that the situation is similar to Serif in two aspects (the former makers of Affinity products)
- they also provide Affinity v3 for free, but AI features are only available as part of the paid Canva subscriptions
- I found on his website the seducing AI features which have a pricing page, but this is a different online tool from the same developer for generating image, video, audio and 3D models.
And back to the advantages:
- These ArtCraft products are free, unlike Adobe’s subscription-based products.
- Many of user now willing to switch to Linux, because PhotoCraft is able to run on this OS
I just opened PhotoCraft once. Regarding drawing, photo editing and vector graphics I’m satisfied with Affinity, but Video editing and post processing can be interesting.
If you want to try them just go to the storytold github page.
UPDATE: this suite develops so rapidly: PhotoCraft v0.3.0 released 4 days ago. Now v0.7.0 is available. This incredible release tempo shows that AI software development is way faster than a human developer. Unbelievable.
Summary
So that is the short story of Adobe Suite vibe coded. And it’s not over as you can see.
What you think about these news? Are you tried these tools? Will software developers who don’t use AI still have a chance of finding work?
